We did not try to out-spec the best open smart glasses on the market. We matched them, held the price at $349, and spent our effort on the part nobody had built: the software a service company can actually hand to a crew on Monday.
There is no display, and that is deliberate. Dropping it is what buys the 43-gram frame and the 12-hour battery, and it means nothing sits between a technician and the equipment they are working on.

Open source
You can read every line that runs on your crew’s faces.
The stack is MIT licensed. Read it, change it, host it on your own infrastructure, keep running it if we go away. For a device with a camera on it, sitting on your technicians and pointed at your customers’ sites, that should be the floor rather than a feature.
It also means an in-house developer can extend it. If you already run a field service platform, the output is structured data and the integration is yours to make.

What exactly is R-Glass?
Camera-and-audio smart glasses for field technicians, running an open-source stack. 43 grams, no display, 12-hour battery, $349. The hardware is the same class as the best open smart glasses on the market; the difference is that the trade workflows are already built.
How is this different from Mentra Live?
Mentra sells an excellent developer platform and tells you to build your app on it. That is the right answer if you have engineers. If you run a service company, you want the finished tool. Same hardware class, same $349, but the field-service software is included rather than a project you have to staff.
Is it really open source?
Yes, MIT licensed. You can read the code, change it, self-host it and keep running it if we disappear. For a device that sits on your crew’s faces and records your customers’ sites, that should be the minimum bar.
There is no display. Is that a downside?
It is a trade-off we made on purpose. Dropping the display is what gets the frame to 43 grams and the battery to 12 hours, and it means nothing obstructs a technician’s vision on a ladder or a rooftop. The useful output in field service is audio and capture, not overlay.
When do they ship?
We are taking reservations now and have not set a public ship date. Reserving costs nothing and charges nothing — we will email you with a date and a price confirmation before anything is billed, and you can walk away at that point.
What does a pilot involve?
Two to five units with one of your crews for a few weeks, set up by us, on real jobs. You get the units and the configuration; we get to watch how the software holds up in your trade. If it does not earn its place, you tell us and we stop.
What about recording customers and staff?
The camera activates only when a technician explicitly starts it. Before a pilot we help you write a recording policy for your crews and your customers, because getting this wrong is the fastest way to fail with wearables.
